The Xbox is a console of the so called new generation consoles and hit the US market on November 15th 2001. The success of the playstation 2 (produced by Sony), Gamecube (by Nintendo) and Sega Dreamcast (by Sega) encouraged Microsoft to anticipate a profitable sector in this market. Microsoft, formerly and still nowadays known for their their software operating system, utilized their experience and knowledge to develop bring to the market the first Xbox.

It had a hard start, not because of any shotcomings of its hardware or games, but of the horrific prices as it came out. Consequently not that much advertisment was necessary and the Xbox 360 already had a community before it was released on November 22th 2005 in the USA. With these advantages, the release had a great impact and untill the end of 2006 over 10 million exemplars were sold, though the price at the start had been even more than the predecessor initially. Today about 30 million copies have been sold, not least because Microsoft used newest technology and supported an ever evolving community around the console and the games attached to it.
